Hi I’m Kathy!

When I was approached about running for City Council, I asked, “Why me?” The answers varied, but the majority stated that they knew I loved my community, that I listen, and they knew I  would work to benefit the whole community.

I thought about the comments and decided that, yes, I could serve and find ways to continue to make Harrisonburg a place with clean, safe, thriving neighborhoods; with responsible and inclusive development; and with open, citizen focused government. I would like the opportunity to work for the people of Harrisonburg and I hope I can earn your vote.

More About Me

I’ve spent all but six months of my life in Virginia.

When I was younger, I stayed home with my children taking on part-time work as a ski instructor and focusing on being a mom. When my children went to school, I became a substitute teacher in Rockingham County before earning my teaching degree at JMU in 1996 and entering full-time teaching in Greene County and later Harrisonburg. Now a retired reading teacher, I have seen the best and the worst of public education.

I’m a champion of public education and a fighter for the well-being of teachers and students.

When I realized Virginia ranked 47th for school spending, I joined VEU (Virginia Educators United) in organizing a March on Richmond to push for funding our schools and paying teachers at the national average. VEU includes teachers, parents, and other public school supporters.

I’m also a proud former member of Harrisonburg Education Association (HEA) and currently a part of Virginia Education Association(VEA) Retired, where I’ve advocated for collective bargaining for teachers.

In my spare time, I enjoy the role of “Nana” to 11 grandchildren, ballroom dancing, gardening, camping, and reading.

I’m ready to take my energy and passion for promoting policies and citizen priorities that support dignity and respect for all residents of Harrisonburg.
